About Letters from the Road

This website began as a series of emails.

When I started my Grand Tour in 2022, I began sending friends and family occasional accounts of where I was, what I had seen, what I had eaten and, from time to time, what had gone wrong. The emails were called Nemo Nox News. The name made more sense when they were news arriving in someone’s inbox.

They gradually became longer and more elaborate. The earliest missives contain relatively few photographs. Later ones sometimes threaten to become small illustrated books. That evolution has been preserved here. These are not retrospective travel articles rewritten with the benefit of hindsight, but the original dispatches, presented destination by destination and in the order they were sent.

A few corrections have been made, and the surrounding website provides maps and basic geographical information, but the newsletters themselves remain essentially as they appeared at the time, including their changing shape, their occasional digressions and their highly variable interest in lunch.
